ADVICE
I provide the unique perspective of an outsider. I listen, I gather information throughout the organization, I bring fresh eyes, and I ask great questions. Because I am not a part of your firm, because I have no history inside your organization, I won't be afraid to question everything. I can see obstacles large and small that team members may have learned to work around. But one thing I won't do is take credit for someone else's ideas. When solutions come from your team, I'll happily give credit where credit is due.
PRACTICAL
A lot of consultants run a pretty typical playbook - they propose grand sweeping changes, large capital investments, and/or major staff changes. Those kinds of suggestions are rarely novel, rarely helpful, and often leave the customer feeling like they paid for something and got nothing. Small business are frequently cash strapped. They aren't looking to throw money at a problem even if they have the money to spare. Money alone is infrequently the answer.
EXPERT
In most small businesses, the principals already have the answers. They just need a little help in working their way to them. In a business, particularly a small business, the Owner/CEO/President - the person with whom the buck stops - may find themselves with no one to whom they can turn for perspective. Not because of any deficiencies in their team. Not because they lack employees with whom they can discuss the firm's problems. But because of human nature. Every person in a business has self-interest. That's not a bad thing - it just means that the interests of any individual employee can diverge from the interest of the firm. I am unbiased - my interests are solely aligned with yours.
